Appleton auto repair shop marks National Preparedness Month with practical guidance for safer fall and winter travel

The Richmond Street Automotive Vehicle Preparedness Checklist recommends that motorists address five areas during September:

1. Confirm battery and charging-system condition. Cooler weather can expose a weakening battery that appeared reliable during summer. Testing can identify reduced capacity before a no-start situation occurs.

2. Inspect tires and verify cold inflation pressure. Tread condition, wear patterns and inflation affect handling and braking. AAA notes that tire pressure can decrease by about 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature, making seasonal pressure checks especially important.

3. Review brakes, fluids and visibility systems. Brake condition, coolant protection, exterior lights, windshield wipers, washer fluid and the defroster all become more important as daylight shortens and fall weather arrives.

4. Build or refresh a vehicle emergency kit. Useful supplies may include a flashlight, reflective warning devices, a phone charging cable or battery pack, first-aid items, drinking water, nonperishable snacks, blankets, gloves and an ice scraper. Drivers should tailor the kit to household needs and expected travel conditions.

5. Document roadside and emergency contacts. Drivers should keep roadside-assistance information, emergency contacts and important medical information accessible even if a phone battery is depleted or cellular service is unavailable.

FEMA’s 2026 National Preparedness Month theme, “Americans Stand Ready,” emphasizes personal readiness, family protection and community resilience. Additional preparedness resources are available at Ready.gov.
